Big Numbers Characterize 1031 Exchange Market By Michelle Napoli The overall dollar value of property sold in the down-legs of 1031 exchanges practically doubled between the 2000 tax filing and 2003. According to analysis from Louis S. Weller, San Francisco-based principal of Deloitte & Touche’s tax services group, roughly $225 billion to $250 billion of property of all kinds were relinquished as part of these like-kind exchanges in 2003—about 80% to 90% of which were real estate, Weller estimates.
